Reclaim, Repurpose, Recycle

HYKE’s three Rs

At the heart of HYKE is a simple three word mantra that sums up the philosophy of sustainability and waste reduction that we believe in and adhere to through every stage of our gin-making process, from sourcing ingredients to creating our packaging.

This means that HYKE is only made using sustainably sourced surplus materials generated by other businesses.

We call this mantra the HYKE three Rs.

Reclaim. Repurpose. Recycle.

One

Reclaim

Our gin is made from reclaimed grapes that would have otherwise gone to waste. These have been shipped into the UK for supermarkets from some of the finest grape farms in the world, but they get left out of the punnets because of; odd shapes and sizes, the bunch doesn’t quite fit, or simply because they’ve fallen loose. They may not fit a supermarket punnet, but they’re a perfect fit for our gin.
We also reclaim the Aluminium for our bottles, as these are made from 100% recycled aluminium and are forever recyclable.

Two

Repurpose

With HYKE the biggest example of repurposing is the tonnes and tonnes of surplus grapes we saveand distill into gin. The grape spirit that comes from them is what gives HYKE gin its unique character.
In our years of making HYKE gin we’ve managed to save over 6.5 million tonnes of grapesfrom going into landfill.

Three

Recycle

The Aluminium we use is 100% post-consumer recycled aluminium and can be reprocessed without any loss of quality. Not just once, but over and over and over again in an endless recycling loop. In other words, forever.
Recycling aluminium uses less than 5% of the energy required to make the original, primary aluminium.

We actively find, adopt and perfect as many waste and energy saving production methods as we can. While it may not be the responsibility of gin makers to change the world it is our responsibility to do all we can to move towards a cleaner, greener future for society and the planet. It’s not the whole solution but it’s definitely worth raising a glass to. As well as direct action like this, we’re also 100% committed to embracing a circular economy within our own business as well as promoting it to the wider drinks industry.
